Welcome to the official home page of the Milford Criterium. Building on the success of our inaugural race in the summer of 2009, we plan to make enhance the race experience for our racers and spectators at the 2010 edition of this exciting race. This event is hosted by the Huron Valley Athletic Club, a non-profit organization for area outdoor athletes of all skill levels and abilities. HVAC's goal is to promote outdoor athletics as part of a healthy lifestyle. By promoting events like this race,
we hope that it will encourage participation from both young and old. Milford is fast becoming a hub for a
variety of outdoor activities. Its geographic proximity to a number of state and county parks and trail systems makes it an ideal destination for outdoor sports, recreation and eco-tourism.

What Is A Criterium?
From Wikipedia.org: "A criterium, or crit, is a bike race held on a short course (usually less than 5 km), often run on closed-off city centre streets." A crit race is unique when compared to a stage race such as the Tour
de France because it is much shorter and appreciably more intense. That intensity also breeds speed and excitement. Because the race course involves multiple laps on a closed course, spectators see racers many times during race, experiencing the excitement as it happens. Because crits are so spectator-friendly, it is one of the most popular competitive cycling events in the U.S. The winner is determined when the first rider crosses the finish line after a predetermined length of time has elapsed. In addition, throughout the race "primes" (pronounced "preems") are awarded to riders who are in the lead at specific intervals during the race. This encourages racers who may not have a chance at winning the overall race to go after a prime. This adds to
the intensity and keeps the excitement level high throughout.
